Can Uncertainty Management be Realized in a Finite Totally Ordered Probability Algebra?

چکیده
In this paper, the feasibility of using fi nite totally ordered probability models un der Aleliunas's Theory of Probabilistic Logic [Aleliunas 88] is investigated. The general form of the probability algebra of these models is derived and the number of pos sible algebras with given size is deduced. Based on this analysis, we discuss problems of denominator-indifference and ambiguity generation that arise in reasoning by cases and abductive reasoning. An example is given that illustrates how these problems arise. The investigation shows that a finite probability model may be of very limited us age.

On the foundations of Bayesianism
We discuss precise assumptions entailing Bayesianism in the line of investigations started by Cox, and relate them to a recent critique by Halpern. We show that every finite model which cannot be rescaled to probability violates a natural and simple refinability principle. A new condition, separability, was found sufficient and necessary for rescalability of infinite models. We finally characte...

متن کاملQualitative Operators for Dealing with Uncertainty
In Bayesian networks as well as in knowledge based systems, uncertainty in propositions can be represented by degrees of belief encoded by qualitative values. In this paper, we present an alternative approach to classic probability theory in the particular case where the set of probability degrees [0,1] is replaced by a totally ordered set of symbolic values. After having defined the four most ...
متن کاملWhat is the plausibility of probability?(revised 2003, 2015)
We present and examine a result related to uncertainty reasoning, namely that a certain plausibility space of Cox's type can be uniquely embedded in a minimal ordered field. This, although a purely mathematical result, can be claimed to imply that every rational method to reason with uncertainty must be based on sets of extended probability distributions, where extended probability is standard ...

We discuss precise assumptions entailing Bayesianism in the line of investigations started by Cox, and relate them to a recent critique by Halpern. We show that every finite model which cannot be rescaled to probability violates a natural and simple refinability principle. We characterize the acceptable ways to handle uncertainty in infinite models based on Cox’s assumptions. Certain closure pr...
